What are the criteria for picking a CMS amongst the myriad of options out there?


Choosing a Content Management System (CMS) for me is much more about choosing the right partner in a specific digital signage project.  I often have different considerations that help me choose the right partner depending on the level of support and customization I am looking for.  For example, there are projects where the operator will want to customize every detail as well as have the desire for every request to be managed by a third party.  In other cases, I have had the opposite preference where an operator is looking for the ownership and flexibility to manage the system themselves.  I’ve vetted multiple partners that have platforms that accommodate those two different needs better than the other.  In addition, I’ve also considered the pricing for both of these types of CMS solutions.  I know that I may pay more for the solution that provides more support as opposed to the one that is completely turned over once designed.  The last piece I consider is how much of a strategic partner I may need during the design development phase.  I choose different CMS partners depending on that need.  For example, I may be looking for a lot of help in designing the structure of the solution.  In other scenarios, I may be looking to give that complete direction to the developer.  Finding several partners with different capabilities is key when going through these criteria. Consider different partners who specialize in different needs, pricing and tiers of support with your CMS needs.
