What are the criteria for picking a CMS amongst the myriad of options out there?


Determining the criteria for selecting a Content Management System (CMS) can be one of the most important choices of your digital signage adventure. Vendor selection can be a daunting task, but it is important to ensure your selection is the one that fits best. Vendor partnership is critical to success. Understanding the technology a vendor will offer, it is also import to know what the future roadmap entails. Another key element for the selection process should be the type of support you can expect to receive. This is more important than I realized when my company’s first CMS was chosen. The support, or lack thereof, made a huge impact on the poor success realized with my initial digital signage installation.

Another critical determining factor is money. What is the overall budget available to spend on your CMS? Truly understanding this amount will help you focus on only those vendors that your company can afford to employ. In addition, knowing exactly how your company plans to use digital signage before choosing a CMS is paramount to being able to select the best fit for the future. Sometimes, having a less complicated CMS when starting out can help ensure success for your digital signage project.

Finally, it is important to have the right engagement of personnel for CMS selection. Depending only on IT employees for this decision could possibly cause issues for the content creation team. Moreover, allowing only the group creating content to make the choice might destroy the integrity of the digital signage infrastructure. Having a team of people from various backgrounds involved in the selection process can help ensure the right decision is made.
