The digital signage industry has grown in leaps and bounds since I got involved with it. Products have gotten better, thinner, lighter, bigger, etc. Last year, we saw commercially viable flexible displays, ones that could be mounted via magnets; they were so thin and light. We saw displays that would work well when propped up against a window, allowing light through when turned off, yet showing content when turned on. We saw a leap in quality on direct view LED displays, for both indoor and outdoor. We’ve seen more innovative methods to connect our signage networks, and greater functionality from all of the content software systems. 3D displays, without glasses, are coming to fruition.
The one common thread for me comes down to cost. I can have all these amazing effects, but at a heavy price. My biggest wish from the industry is to make these technologies affordable for the small and medium business. To date, there are so many amazing innovations I’ve seen, but none that we can actually afford as a small organization. With that said, I fully believe it will happen. It’s just a matter of time.
