With so many flat-panel display options now on the market, what is the best approach to making the best choice for a project?
In our world, the answer to this question is plain and simple. Find a standard that can run in your environment and stick to it. We have a rather large digital signage network, and in order to maintain operational efficiencies, it is paramount to have standards. Adhering to standards not only helps with operation support when stocking spare equipment, but also helps from a procurement process to purchase a consistent brand at scale and get better pricing. Our environment is very tough on equipment as about 95 percent+ of our displays run 24×7 in smoky and dusty areas. We required a commercial-grade display that can handle this punishment and has extra cooling and functionality for some of the automation features we require. Our biggest challenge from a budgeting perspective with using these displays is getting the financial and operations folks to understand the difference between a commercial-grade and consumer-grade display and why there is a premium on costs for what we use. We have been very successful though at doing this and thus have been able to stick to a standard for all new displays we purchase for digital signage.
