What role do you see holograms and/or virtual reality playing in the future of digital signage content?
Technologies that require glasses or headsets don’t play well with digital signage. Viewers typically won’t put anything on to engage with content. That said, glasses-free 3D is getting really good. What started as headache-inducing and odd looking graphics on screen is improving to the point that it can convincingly render 3D imagery. Connected with gesture technology, glasses-free 3D will allow for retail demonstrations, which allow you to “peer under the hood” and learn about details of a product from a new perspective.
On another level, smartphones are getting very powerful and can process virtual reality and 3D very well. New apps are creating virtual reality experiences with the devices we have in our pockets. Smart and highly creative content producers can push the boundaries beyond the digital sign and deliver content to a smartphone that works in concert with a digital sign. We will soon see digital signage encouraging viewers to experience interactive experiences with their smartphone and helping guide a process for viewers.
