Ask the Board – May 15, 2017 | LAWRENCE CHANG

What improvements have you seen in hardware that have made it easier to install, operate and maintain displays in outdoor locations?”

While we’re not much involved with outdoor signage, we’ve seen tremendous strides in many facets of outdoor installations. LED technology enabled displays to handle bright and sunny environments, where their brightness helped alleviate the lack of visibility. Indoor signage pieces were placed inside cabinets that were insulated and/or heated, but the latest ones are ruggedized enough to handle even our cold climates, and with that, a lower operating cost due to the lack of heaters, AC units or extra lighting. On larger displays, individual smaller panels can be replaced quickly and easily, so that the whole sign doesn’t go off at once, instead of just a small grid of pixels. Reliability also got a boost from more durable internals, with less moving parts. At the same time as these technological advances, the cost was also coming down, creating a good scenario for signage in general.
