I would say the biggest metric for success in a non-ad-based signage deployment would be the ‘impact’ it makes on the viewing audience. I have found myself simply standing and watching the display because it was either emotionally moving or simply visually amazing many times. There is a lot you can do with content, and if you’re going to deploy non-ad-based material, it needs to have an impact and be relevant to the people watching. People will notice, and then word will spread.
