Though this world you are describing below seems quite frightening (no ads?), I can only imagine that if someone wasn’t able to track the revenue generated, then they could, at the very least, measure the cost savings in the maintenance of the signs (vs. static backlit signs) and/or the fact that it is more environmentally friendly because there are no more bulbs, ballasts or artwork to dispose of when changes are needed. In the case of digital wayfinding signage (at an airport, for example), if combined with beacon technology, you might be able to measure quicker processing times (from ticketing to the gate or from the gate to baggage claim), which in theory, would result in a more streamlined and pleasant experience for the passenger.
