“Are there any new technical capabilities in hardware and/or software opening up new creative options for content playback, design, or interactivity? How are they being applied? How well are they being applied?”


Yes.  Advances in technology are changing the very nature of what ‘Interactivity’ even means when it comes to digital engagement and ‘signage.’  Hardware form is also adapting to software-enabled function.  And tech is being combined in really innovative ways to elevate services and experience.

Here are a couple of examples:

1) A voice-activated digital mirror, with Amazon Alexa, that can also deliver digital content and messaging.  It won’t be long before the messaging delivered is personalized based on the person the sign ‘sees’ standing in front of it!    

2) A robotic, mobile, digital display with real-time, zero latency interactivity with a distant live person.  How’s that for interactive engagement!  This concept could be a digital sign, a conversational bot, a conversation with a real person…or all of the above.
