“Are there any new technical capabilities in hardware and/or software opening up new creative options for content playback, design, or interactivity? How are they being applied? How well are they being applied?”
We are just now starting to explore the ability of big data and analytics to create interactive experiences. For example, being able to detect customer information via cameras and serving up content based on the demographics. At a recent conference, a booth was exhibiting the ability to detect age, gender, and emotion with the use of a simple computer camera. This sort of information can be applied in how/what content is served up in the digital signage space. Similarly, on the operational side, integrations into the digital signage regarding temperature or inventory can be used to create content that is specific to the weather (e.g. hot or cold beverages) or auto-removing content based on depleted inventory. The possibilities are limitless, and I look forward to seeing how/which innovation takes the lead and permeates the industry.
