“What are the challenges with migrating from an on-premise solution to a cloud-based solution?”

Assuming you know the differences between cloud and on-premise solutions, there are a couple of considerations to review:

  1. Cloud-based software is priced under a monthly or annual subscription, with additional recurring fees for support, training and updates. With on-premise, these fees are usually a one-time factor, so getting used to monthly fees can be taxing on your financial arrangements. Cloud-based systems can be typically considered an operating expenditure instead of a capital expense.
  2. Security is always a concern. Reputable cloud companies have strict standards in place to keep data safe. Find out what these are, or even seek a third-party security audit of cloud signage company prior to the purchase. What conformances and security audits do they have today? Where are they with security, privacy assurance, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) etc.?
  3. And finally, before the actual migration, the signage company should be willing to assist, at a no or low cost, to help architect your needs based on your previous on-premise setup. Your IT department will be doing less work; ease their concerns by involving them in the migration. Get documents, drawings, designs and service-level agreements in the hands of your IT department.
