“What are the challenges with migrating from an on-premise solution to a cloud-based solution?”

My experience with the challenges of migrating from an on-premise solution to a cloud-based solution is limited to a current signage installation effort. As an end user of cloud-based solutions in other situations (file management/document sharing/etc.), I have found the transition smooth except for the fact that this initial change won’t actually improve access to all of the managed signage. The change on this one project wasn’t planned and was implemented as a solution to a security challenge that was discovered during installation that was unique to this one install. The cloud-based solution in this instance provides the broader access to the system that is needed without creating unacceptable risk to the rest of our network. This does, however, create a bifurcated content management process that will add time to the overall management of the system. I expect that we will migrate the rest of the system to the cloud-based method over time, but for the foreseeable future, those of us who manage the system will have to manage two very similar systems to accomplish a change on all our screens. This is a short-term pain point and is manageable, especially given the benefits that will be realized by accessing the full program remotely (something that can’t be done with our current on-premises solution).
