“Does gesture control really have a place in digital signage, or is it a flash-in-the-pan trend?”
Gesture control is fantastic for accessibility or immersive experiences. I haven’t seen the usage take off for broadcast and standard signage-based implementations yet. Gesture is very individualized. Because standards are lacking, that individual would need to learn what the gesture language is and what the limits are for the installation. Simply replacing mouse/keyboard/tapping with gesture is foolhardy. Besides a lack of standardization, the technology has been finicky, lengthy to use and awkward; especially in populated locations. When gamified, kids love it, but that’s where it stops today.
