“Does gesture control really have a place in digital signage, or is it a flash-in-the-pan trend?”
Like any new technology, one size doesn’t fit all. The same is true of gesture control. The technology’s integration into existing hardware and software will depend on the use case of the installation or the business case for the particular vertical. Even within a vertical, its implementation will depend on each individual project — what audience the signage installation is designed to serve, the environment where it will be located in, and of course, what the stakeholders have identified as the return on investment or return on objective they are looking to achieve. I think gesture control would work well in entertainment venues and immersive environments where augmented reality is available; as well as retail, health clubs and other fitness/wellness locations, digital art installations, and hospitals and medical offices. But again, it will depend on how the technology fits into the project in question. At this point I don’t believe we know enough about gesture control and digital signage to say whether it’s a flash in the pan or here to stay.
