Busy Canadian Intersection Expands Digital Signage Network


10 Dundas East looked to expand their current digital signage network in order to better distribute wayfinding, event, service and vendor information to the more than 800,000 people that pass through the area each day.

10 Dundas East, at the corner of Yonge and Dundas in Toronto, is one of the busiest intersections in the country. Connected to the PATH, the world’s largest underground shopping complex with 27 km (16 miles) of shopping arcades, there is a direct entrance to Dundas Subway Station. Each day, more than 860,000 people enter this highly influential area to work. The courtyard at Yonge and Dundas Square is host to more than 1,000 events per year such as live concerts, promotional and charity events, free movies and festivals, drawing more than 1 million event specific patrons into the area. An expansion of the current digital signage network in order to better inform visitors with information including directions, weather forecasts and marketing for upcoming events was planned for winter 2014.

As a multi-level facility hosting a wide range of venues and services and a great number of entrance/exit points, providing wayfinding information to a large volume of people in high traffic areas throughout 10 Dundas East was key.

Being able to display general network-wide information throughout the venue (wayfinding, weather, etc.), as well as location specific messaging in various areas of the venue (movie promotions near the theatre, QSR promotions near the food court), all maintained from one central location was also key.

The solution also needed the capability to display live streaming video during special events.

Expansion involved the inclusion of 20 LCD screens (for targeted messaging in specific areas of the venue) and LED ribbon boards (for maximum exposure in high traffic areas of the facility).

The Audience software platform was chosen as the content management system as it was able to control and display content (including live video streaming) across the entire network on a variety of screens from one central location.
