Singapore’s Changi Airport regularly tops the list of the world’s best airports, featuring a wide range of facilities to inform and delight passengers. Recently, two state-of-the-art NanoLumens Performance Series LED displays were installed in its T4 terminal to captivate passengers with high-definition digital content 24/7. The first measures an impressive 70 meters wide by 5 meters tall with a 60-millimeter pixel pitch display, while the second measures 10 meters by 6 meters with a 4-millimeter pixel pitch display.

BACKGROUND
When the Singapore Changi Airport began building the new Terminal 4, they enlisted the help of NanoLumens to design two state-of-the-art NanoLumens Performance Series LED displays that would achieve maximum impact for all airport passengers and visitors. Located above Terminal 4’s centralized security screening area, the “Immersive Wall” has been dubbed one of the largest indoor airport displays in the world. Additionally, NanoLumens was chosen for a display in the departure transit area’s Heritage Zone, which is built directly into a shophouse façade. Both displays run throughout the day, with the Immersive Wall displaying flowing, geometric waves of 3D animations, picturesque life-like scenes and a funny, playful animation.

CHALLENGES
When building the new terminal, Changi Airport wanted to incorporate two impressive display solutions that would captivate passengers with high-definition digital content 24 hours a day. In order to meet their requirements, each display would need to allow the enthralling visuals created by Moment Factory to achieve their maximum impact for all airport passengers and visitors. At the same time, each display would need to meet strict RFP specifications to accommodate the demanding content that would be displayed.

The solution required several mechanical enhancements in order to overcome EMI, EMC and other strict RFP specifications, and the project was one of the most competitive bidding processes. The displays beat every spec required, including weight, power draw, brightness, viewing angles, electromagnetic compatibility and electronic magnetic interference limits. With roughly a year of just the bidding process, in addition to the actual installation, this was a highly complex project with many moving parts.

SOLUTIONS
In order to meet the installation’s strict RFP specifications, NanoLumens created a custom solution specifically for Changi based on a redesign of their proprietary Nixel Series technology that was able to accommodate the demanding Moment Factory content.

The new rigid Nixel technology is truly optimized for being flat with a larger diode for the highest brightness and is rear serviceable. Being able to access the displays from a high vantage point through rear service will keep traveler visibility of the displays at an absolute maximum.

The “Immersive Wall” was installed above T4’s centralized security screening area and the other display in the departure transit Heritage Zone is integrated into the zone’s facade, comprising the second floor of two of the buildings and showing a dramatic original film set in 1930s Singapore.

RESULTS
With the help of the new NanoLumens Performance Series LED displays installed in Terminal 4 of Singapore’s Changi Airport, travelers are able to enjoy the Immersive Wall, which has been dubbed one of the largest indoor airport displays in the world. It displays flowing, geometric waves of 3D animations, picturesque life-like scenes from throughout Singapore, and a funny, playful animation of the imaginary journey luggage takes after check-in.

Additionally, visitors are able to take in the sights of the The Heritage Zone display, which is integrated convincingly into the zone’s facade, comprising the second floor of two of the buildings and showing Peranakan Love Story, a dramatic original film set in 1930s Singapore. One of the most striking results of this installation was that NanoLumens and E&E delivered every part of the product and installation on schedule, which is rare for a project of this magnitude and complexity.
