FULL WEBINAR: Making Digital Signage Greener


In this webinar sponsored by NEC, Thomas Kunka, Senior Applications Specialist for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Jeff Porter, Founder and CEO of Porter Digital Signage, picked up where the Digital Signage Expo Advisory Board’s Industry Consultant Council left off last August by discussing ways to make digital signage greener than it already is.

Obviously, digital signage aims to eliminate the harmful environmental effects and the lack of efficiency associated with static, paper-based signage. However, as Porter explained, the industry still has some serious issues with power consumption and e-waste. In other words, we’re no longer filling up landfills with paper, but we’re throwing away entire screens once they’ve run their course.

As university campuses are full of new ideas and opportunities to try new things, Kunka stepped in with a few ideas on how to reduce e-waste and power consumption while boosting efficiency. Open-frame tablets, ambient solar keyboards and energy dashboards to inspire moderated behavior are just a few. Check out the full webinar below for more:

Presenter Bios: Thomas Kunka leverages more than 20 years of experience in higher education information technology to produce innovative IT services. He currently leads the design and implementation of enterprise digital signage services for the Urbana campus. Having observed a growing need for the sharing of knowledge and best practices across institutions, Kunka recently led the formation of an EDUCAUSE Constituent’s Group dedicated to issues related to using digital signage in higher education. Thomas earned M.S. and B.S. degrees in applied computer science from Illinois State University.

jeff-porter-picJeff Porter is the President/CEO of Porter Digital Signage, an independent third-party consulting company specializing in digital signage. For nearly 20 years, Porter was a principal at Scala, the world’s leading digital signage software platform. He is a sought-after speaker at industry events, and acclaimed as one of the industry’s pioneers. Porter has served on the POPAI Board of Directors from 2006 to 2012, chaired POPAI’s digital signage group and recently co-authored the fourth edition of the book The Power of Marketing at-Retail. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and his master’s from the University of Illinois.
